Female Fertility Issues

Acupuncture has a long tradition of increasing female fertility along with men’s. It is used to prepare the body for conception and pregnancy by balancing the reproductive cycle and improving overall health and emotional well being. It can benefit and support women undergoing IVF and other forms of assisted conception and there is research to suggest that regular acupuncture can help improve sperm quality and quantity.

Our Baby Steps Approach

Preconception Preparation

The optimum time to boost female fertility is in the three months before conception occurs. This is how long it takes for an egg to become ready to be released during normal ovulation. Acupuncture treatments over this time focuses on improving your general wellbeing and reproductive health in order to positively influence the environment in which the egg develops.

We work with you either individually or as a couple to identify and make healthy changes to improve your health, diet, exercise regimen, life-work balance, lifestyle, sleep patterns and relaxation. Improving your general health can boost fertility in both partners and ensure a healthy pregnancy and baby. It therefore makes sense for both partners to get into the best possible shape prior to trying to conceive.

Regulating your menstrual cycle

Acupuncture is used to regulate the menstrual cycle and preparing the endometrial lining of the uterus (important for implantation and nourishment of the foetus), promoting ovulation and egg quality, balancing fertility hormones, and reducing stress. Acupuncture does this by resolving problems such as irregular ovulation, irregular cycles and painful periods. The menstrual cycle can be helped to run more smoothly and natural female fertility enhanced.

Treatment is often continued in early pregnancy to support and maintain maternal and foetal wellbeing. Because it treats the individual person and their particular pattern of symptoms, Chinese medicine is also able to help in many cases where the diagnosis is “unexplained infertility”.

Stress levels and your emotional wellbeing

Overwhelming feelings of stress, frustration, anxiety and depression are typical emotions couples having problems trying to conceive can experience. Prolonged stress can affect female fertility, by preventing or delaying ovulation and implantation and reducing libido and normal blood flow around the reproductive organs. We therefore place much emphasis on providing emotional support and using acupuncture to switch off the stress response and promote relaxation and therefore improved female fertility.

Clinical experience suggests acupuncture helps in the following ways

  • increases blood flow to the uterus and thickens uterine lining
  • improves ovarian function and egg quality
  • regulates and balances hormone levels for improved follicular response
  • relaxing the body to decrease stress and anxiety
  • reduces the side effects of drugs used in IVF
  • lessens the risk of ovarian hyperstimulation in women with PCOS
  • decreases the chances of miscarriage

Initial studies showed that success rates of IVF almost doubled when acupuncture was incorporated on the day of embryo transfer. More recently it has been found that acupuncture in the weeks before egg collection and transfer has a beneficial effect on stress hormone levels, as well as a higher pregnancy and live birth rate.

Chinese medicine can also help to treat male reproductive health, improving sperm count, quality, morphology and motility, as well as general wellbeing through what can be a stressful process.
